Begun in 1989, the theater was founded by a group of recent graduates from the theater program at Purchase College: Kevin Lawler, Hughston Walkinshaw, and Nils Haaland. The theater was started at the invite of the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, with whom the theater initially shared a space. The Blue Barn has primarily presented the works of contemporary American playwrights, including David Mamet, Sam Shepard, Christopher Durang, and Lanford Wilson. The theater has also acted as a showcase for Omaha-based playwrights, such as Tim Siragusa, Robert Vivian, and Max Sparber.
